Our English department encourages a great range of transferable skills for employment in interesting and innovative ways. Our Creative Writing Tutors are all published authors, with expertise in short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, novels and script writing. Our literature lecturers regularly appear as experts on TV and radio and curate exhibitions to explore the literary world with wide audiences.
Get your work published alongside some of the big names in literature through our in-house publishing company Grist books. Grist publishes our students alongside some of the big names in literature. These include: Simon Armitage, Melvin Burgess, Helen Simpson, John Boyne, Toby Litt and Lemn Sissay. Student published work is given to key players in the industry, such as publishers, agents and editors. It’s a unique opportunity to gain valuable career experience.
Huddersfield hosts the award-winning international Literature Festival which attracts some of the biggest and best writers in the world: Jodie Picoult, Joanne Harris, Irvine Welsh and Ian Rankin to name a few. You can get involved in local literature festivals and events, meeting famous authors. Our students are at the centre of the festival, planning, programming, curating and stewarding events. This has led to a number of our students securing professional careers in festival management.
