Minimum entry requirements for first degree courses

The University’s standard minimum entry requirements for admission to undergraduate level courses are The Framework for Higher Education Qualifications of Degree-Awarding Bodies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (FHEQ) Level 3 equivalent qualifications. Individual course minimum requirements are, for many courses, higher and may also require minimum grades in specific subject areas.

These are our minimum entry requirements for undergraduate students.  Please check our course listings for course-specific entry requirements as your chosen course may require additional qualifications.

International qualifications will be considered and evaluated by referring to independently published guides recognised within the United Kingdom higher education sector such as UK Naric. Further details can be found on our website

Minimum entry requirements

For entry to first degree courses, we’re looking for people who have one or more of the following level 3 qualifications:

  • Passes in five subjects from a combination of GCE Advanced Level (includes A Level and AS Level) and GCSE which must include at least two subjects at Advanced Level*
  • Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers
  • Applied General and Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma
  • Applied General and Technical National Award, Certificate, Subsidiary Diploma or Diploma
  • Technical Level (T Level)
  • International, European or Welsh Baccalaureate
  • Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 Level 3 credits achieved at Merit
  • Irish Leaving certificate with Grade H6 or above in four subjects at Higher Level
  • Cambridge Pre-U Diploma

Note: * Must not include an Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS Level) in the same subject as an Advanced GCE (A Level)

Other qualifications

Core Maths

The University of Huddersfield welcomes applications from students who have taken one of the Core Maths qualifications. We believe that this qualification supports the development of mathematical skills for progression to higher education, particularly for those students applying to courses in subject areas such as psychology, geography, business and computing. For the majority of our courses, we will make offers which can include the UCAS Tariff points gained from Core Maths; but please check our course-specific web pages for the specific entry requirements for the courses you are interested in.

Extended Project Qualification

The University of Huddersfield welcomes applications from students who have taken an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).  We believe that the skills that students develop through the EPQ are directly relevant to and useful for university level study.  For the majority of our courses, we will make offers which can include the UCAS Tariff points gained from the EPQ; but please check our course-specific web pages for the specific entry requirements for the courses you are interested in.

Acceptance of additional UCAS points

In addition to those published on the UCAS Tariff, The University of Huddersfield will accept UCAS points from a number of schemes. The University operates two of its own schemes: The Progression Module and Headstart Huddersfield.

The Progression Module ‌

The Progression Module is a structured Higher Education and employment preparation programme for sixth form and college students. The scheme awards 12 UCAS points and is open to Year 12 students in registered schools and colleges.

Headstart Huddersfield

Headstart Huddersfield offers eligible students, interested in applying to the University of Huddersfield, the opportunity to gain extra UCAS points.

The scheme awards 8 UCAS points to eligible Level 3 students (widening participation eligibility criteria is applied).

Schemes operated by other higher education institutions

The University of Huddersfield will accept up to 8 UCAS points from any official scheme offering UCAS points to applicants, operated by a UK Higher Education institution. 

Terms and conditions

UCAS points cannot be combined from schemes.

Successful completion of any of the above schemes does not guarantee a place on a University of Huddersfield course.

For UCAS points to be recognised, the scheme must be recorded on the UCAS application form under the qualifications section. Select ‘other’ and enter the scheme title and awarding body (institution code).

Mature students

The University of Huddersfield welcomes applications from those who have significant work or life experience and who may not necessarily meet the published academic requirements for their chosen course.  As an applicant without traditional entry qualifications, you will be required to demonstrate evidence of your motivation, potential, knowledge and ability to study the course of your choice, and the University must be satisfied that your work or life experience is equivalent to the qualifications that other applicants will be studying.
