Offer-making at Huddersfield

Here at Huddersfield, we expect students who join us to have demonstrated their commitment to their studies and future career – whether they are studying A Levels, Applied Generals, or other qualifications. We want all our students to be studying alongside others who have shown equal commitment, and inspire each other to do their very best, get the most out of their time at university and go on to great careers.

It is important to us that our offer-making is transparent, and we are consistent, fair, and equitable in our decisions.  We have signed up to the Admissions code of practice to show our commitment to fair and transparent admissions practices. Details of all the types of offers we make are provided below.

Conditional offer

A conditional offer means your offer of a place on the course is subject to you achieving specified qualifications and/or grades and/or a minimum number of UCAS points. You may also be required to meet subject specific requirements in a subject area related to your course. 

An offer may be conditional upon non-academic requirements e.g. a Disclosure and Barring Service check, a successful visa application or health assessment which is deemed satisfactory.

You will usually receive confirmation of your place on the course following the verification of your results and you can check this online on UCAS Hub.

Unconditional offer

An unconditional offer means your offer of a place on the course is guaranteed and is not subject to you meeting any further requirements. 

Unconditional offers are normally made for students who have already achieved the necessary qualifications to meet the entry requirements for the course for which they have applied.

Where courses require a student to demonstrate abilities in a practical way, for example, audition, evidence of abilities through submission of a portfolio or interview, we may make an unconditional offer where results are still pending if we are confident that the student is right for the course and will succeed.

We may also make unconditional offers in exceptional circumstances, for example where an application is from a mature student with substantial relevant experience.

Attainment

We want to encourage all our potential students to do their best as they study for their current qualifications. These results will be used to assess their ability to make a success of their time here at Huddersfield and with our help to go on to a successful career 

Huddersfield continually monitors and evaluates the impact of offers made to inform future decisions about its offer making policy.

Accepting your offer

Once you have received all your decisions you can make a firm acceptance (this is your first course choice) or make an insurance acceptance. Insurance acceptance acts as a backup to your firm acceptance and you’ll only attend the university course of your insurance acceptance if you don’t meet the conditions of your firm choice. You also have the choice to decline the offer.

When you accept an offer of a place on a course and then enrol as a student of the University, you will be asked to enter into a binding agreement with the University under which you will be subject to the University's regulations, policies and procedures.

Once you've accepted your offer from us as your first (firm) choice, you will be given access to our online pre-enrolment portal known as 'MyHud', which includes useful information that you need to know before joining your course. We will email you once the portal is available and tell you how to access it.

You can then begin to prepare for the exciting time ahead. Results day will come around quicker than you think and it's wise to be a step ahead so once you arrive you can get stuck into university life.

Confirming your place

The University will usually receive examination results for certain qualifications automatically. If your qualification is displayed in the UCAS exam results list you shouldn’t need to notify us of these results.

If your offer of a place is conditional upon examination results and/or qualifications other than those displayed on the list, you will need to send us proof of these to confirm your place.

Applicants with International Qualifications - Please supply a verified translation of your official results, along with a copy of your original examination transcript.

Please send copies of your proofs of examination results and/or other qualifications by e-maill to study@hud.ac.uk using 'Outstanding Qualifications' in the subject line and making sure to include the course that you have applied for (e.g. Outstanding Qualifications Pharmacy). 

*Please note that you need to send us any outstanding certificates or examination results no later than 7 September.  If we have not received your results by this date the University reserves the right to decline your application.

Non-academic conditions

If your place is conditional subject to passing a health check or Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance, then you do not need to send us any examination results. If you have been asked to obtain a DBS clearance as part of your conditional offer, it is your responsibility to check this has been sent to us. Please send the original certificate to your school contact. School contact details will be available in your course joining section of the pre-enrolment portal.

*Please note that you need to send us any outstanding certificates or examination results no later than 7 September.  If we have not received your results by this date the University reserves the right to decline your application. 

What happens on results day?

 

What happens when I get my results?

Your school, college or sixth form will let you know how you’ll receive your results, this could be through the post, or you may have to go and collect them.

You can track your application on the UCAS Hub and can see what your selected universities have decided.

On results day morning you’ll be sent a message from UCAS (by email) and the University (by text) to let you know if your place has been confirmed. If you wish to give us a ring, please make sure that you have already received your results and have your UCAS personal ID handy.

 

What if I didn’t get the results I expected?

We know results day can be stressful and upsetting if you don’t get the grades you were expecting, but don’t panic there are still options available. We may still be able to confirm your place or offer you a place on an alternative course.

First of all, log-on to UCAS Hub and check if you have been accepted by either your first or your second choices or made an alternative course offer. If you are not holding any offers, you’ll automatically be in Clearing. Learn all about the Clearing process.

To get offers from other universities, you’ll need to check the vacancy listings on UCAS and decide which course(s) and universities you’re interested in. Once you have made a shortlist, you’ll then need to call the universities you’re interested in. You may also wish to contact your school/college for further support and advice.

 

What happens if I’m rejected by both firm and insurance choices?

If you are rejected by your first and second choices you’ll be entered in to Clearing. Learn all about the Clearing process.

 

What happens if I’m offered a place on an alternative course at the University?

If your grades were lower than expected, then you may be made an alternative offer by your chosen universities. This could include a foundation year or a place on a different course if you meet their requirements.

 

How do I accept a change of course offer?

If you have been made an alternative offer, this will be updated in your UCAS Hub and you’ll receive a notification of this by email from UCAS. You’ll need to check the details of the new offer and decide whether you would like to accept this.

 

What happens if I don’t receive a decision on the day?

If your offer is still conditional on results day, don’t panic, there could be a number of reasons for this. We advise you to log-on to the UCAS Hub, to see if the reason is explained there. Possible reasons for this could include:

• Not receiving all your results - We might be waiting for the results of other qualifications included in the conditions of your offer, as there are some types of qualifications UCAS don’t send to us, for example GCSEs. You can check what qualifications UCAS send to us. We will send you a text message advising if you are required to send us your certificates for specific qualifications. If this is the case your offer will stay as conditional until we receive them and you need to do this by 31st August deadline.
• Your results may be lower than the conditions of your offer - The admissions tutor may still be considering your application, and we will make a decision as soon as we can.

 

Do I need to evidence that I have obtained my A Level grades?

The University receives many recently achieved qualification results such as A levels via UCAS automatically so there is usually no need to provide evidence until enrolment when you may be asked to provide evidence. We will contact you if we do need you to send your certificates for any qualifications which have not been verified.

 

I've changed my mind about the course I want to study. What do I do?

If you have a firm or insurance offer at the University of Huddersfield and you change your mind about the course you want to study, please email the Student Recruitment Team at study@hud.ac.uk. We will need to check if the course you’re interested in has a place available and if you have the correct grades and subjects for that course.

 

My details are incorrect – who do I contact?

Please ensure your details are correct on the UCAS Hub and then email study@hud.ac.uk so we can arrange for your details to be updated.

 

Unsuccessful decisions

If your application is unsuccessful and wish to receive some feedback you are able to do so in writing. You can request your feedback within 6 weeks of getting your decision. Please include the following information when making your request:

• Full name
• UCAS Personal Identification Number (if your application was made through UCAS)
• Date of birth
• Name of course applied for
• Interview date (if applicable)

Please note that feedback can be requested and is provided only in written format within 6 weeks of receipt of a valid request.

Deferring your entry

If your circumstances have changed and you no longer wish to start your studies next academic year you can defer your entry. Most of our courses accept deferred entry applications.
