Superhero Sphagnum Moss!

Join us on a unique opportunity to help restore the beautiful, local moor land on the special ‘Landscapes for Water Project’, which is being undertaken by the West Yorkshire portfolio of the National Trust.

Sphagnum moss is a superhero for moorland conservation as it can absorb huge amounts of water to provide a natural flood defence and boost climate resilience for people and wildlife.

The session will involve a range of general nursery and propagating work such as the separating of sphagnum moss to create new trays of future moss and wrapping the moss to create plugs that can be planted on the Marsden moors at a later date. This will be followed with a guided walk on the Marsden moorlands to learn a little of the history of the area and to spot some local wildlife.

All transport, equipment and PPE will be provided.

Please be sure to wear warm outdoor clothing, and flat sensible shoes.

The Jo Cox More in Common Centre is the first University of Huddersfield building to be constructed to the WELL Building Standard. It was the first Higher Education building in the United Kingdom to achieve precertification to the standard. The building became operational in early 2023 and fully certified in June 2024. 

Tours are available for all Staff and Students at the University.

Are you curious to explore the Daphne Steele Building, the University’s first Building on the new National Innovation Health campus (NHIC)?

Located at Southgate in the centre of Huddersfield, the building is named in honour of the NHS’s first black matron Daphne Steele and is already welcoming healthcare students through its doors.

This highly sustainable building is the second University building to be built to the prestigious WELL Building Standard which ensures the highest standards for the health and wellbeing of students, staff and users. It is on track for Platinum Pre-certification which is the highest level achievable within the standard.

Andy Thompson, School Manager of the Human Health Sciences will lead the tour and share his expertise on the specialist clinical teaching facilities, world leading research facilities and public facing clinics and services, where the next generation of healthcare professionals will learn the skills and knowledge needed to help improve health outcomes and lead innovation in healthcare for the North of England.

The session will be interactive, and the audience will be asked for their input on how to shape and achieve the university’s sustainability goals. We’ll provide a history of the University of Huddersfield’s relationship with carbon over the years. We’ll talk about previous and current attempts to reduce the university’s carbon emissions, such as the university’s present decarbonisation plan. We’ll dive into what this means for attendees at a personal level, and how they can lower their carbon impacts at home. We’ll also let them know how they can become Sustainability Champions on campus and what this would entail!

The talk will conclude with a Q&A and light refreshments.

This is the concluding event of our 'Plant a Plate' series where we have planted a selection of fruits, nurtured and harvested them, and will now be cooking with the produce from the fruit trees and bushes which have been growing on campus over the year.

The University Head Chef will be presenting a live cooking demonstration on how to make a delicious 'Humble Crumble' using the fruit harvested from the University orchard and fruit bush planters, as well as giving top cooking tips!

Attendees will be given the opportunity to try a sample of the crumble and receive a recipe pack containing all of the dry ingredients to make the dish at home.

Revive Reuse

Revive is a local community interest company charity that sells donated items or reusable items that they have intercepted at Leeds City Council and Kirklees Council waste recycling sites. Part of their remit is to make reusable items available to our local communities at affordable prices. In doing so, they hope to alleviate poverty and hardship - improving the quality of life of those around us.

Revive provide employment and opportunities for those from socially excluded backgrounds. They offer these people the chance to develop skills and socialise in a safe environment. As a result, this can reduce isolation, improve mental health and help those in our communities contribute to the area in which they live.

Revive have opportunities for volunteering in their Huddersfield based shop which can include the following duties:

• Sorting through the donations
• Repairing stock ready for sale
• Retail work
• Operating the online store
• Social Media and digital marketing
• Website design

Volunteering

You will receive basic training and an introduction to our site. This will include our health and safety, policies and procedures. We also often give all our volunteers the opportunity to apply for courses. These courses could be anything from, Health & Safety, Professional Boundaries, PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) and Bicycle Maintenance.

If you are interested in volunteering with Revive then please come and speak to the Volunteer Coordinators on campus to see what opportunities are currently available.

If you would like to donate your unwanted items to Revive you can use the donation banks which are located at the Revive shop which is located next to the bus station in Huddersfield town centre, 8 Upperhead Row, HD1 2JL.

We are excited to announce that as part of our Green Week celebrations The Global Professional Award Team and volunteer students are working on a special collaboration with Oxfam to host a Pop-up pre-loved and vintage clothing stall, with a special rail focusing on professional 'work wear', so you can be tip top ready for your upcoming placement or ready for upcoming interviews following graduation.

The Oxfam campaigning team will be on campus and will be raising awareness of climate justice, and students will have the opportunity to sign up to the pledge.

Oxfam is a charity that partners to communities around the world tackling poverty. When people come together, powerful change can happen. "We are Oxfam. Together we can make a more equal future, free from poverty".

Do your bit by coming and having a browse and treat yourself to some pre-loved clothing, take a stance against fast fashion, support a worthy cause and know that you have made a sustainable purchase.

Vintage Folk were founded in Manchester in 2017 and have since made it their aim to bring affordable, sustainable, and quality vintage clothing to the masses.

Choosing second-hand clothing not only reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, but also gives new life to unique pieces that may have otherwise been forgotten. Vintage clothing is also known for its premium quality and better craftsmanship, and there is something special about wearing a garment that has been around for decades and has stood the test of time. Plus, vintage clothes often have a story behind them and add a touch of character to any wardrobe. You never know what hidden gems you might find!
