What is a Education, Childhood Studies and Early Years degree
If you want to work alongside children, young people and adults to support their development and wellbeing then we offer a range of courses that can help you get started. We’ll give you the opportunity to become someone who can make a life-changing difference to others.
What you can do with a degree in Education, Childhood Studies and Early Years
The degrees we offer will prepare you for a graduate role in a range of rewarding careers, with industry experience built into the core of many of our courses. Our courses encourage you to think critically about a range of contemporary issues such as, factors that shape children and young people’s lives, UK and international concepts in education, diversity and inclusion, mental health and well-being and much more. There are also opportunities to go onto further study on completion of your degree, we offer a range of Postgraduate qualifications.
What's included in your studies?
Real world experience
You will have the opportunity for industrial experience ranging from working in educational provision to gaining experience with charities supporting young people and working alongside counsellors and mentors. On some of our courses you will also gain a nationally recognised qualification. Our degrees will prepare you to lead practice and be at the forefront of your chosen career.
Lecturers in the field
Our professional networks help give you access to a wide range of high quality placement opportunities, expert guest lectures and visits during your studies. It’s this practical focus, coupled with the latest research findings being developed both within the School of Education and Professional Development and the wider academic community, which helps to ensure our students are able to equip themselves with the most relevant knowledge and skills needed within the workplace.

A blend of theory and practical work
You can gain valuable experience in all sorts of settings, from the classroom, to sports projects and community groups. When you’re not on a placement you’ll be learning in one of our specially equipped teaching rooms. In our primary and early years classrooms, for example, you’ll be able to prepare for working with children in the real world. You’ll become familiar with resources used in education and childcare settings and develop your own ideas about how these support children’s development.
My course blends theory and practical work and I’m enjoying exploring all aspects of the role of a teacher. The course tutors and my personal academic tutor have been so supportive and helpful.

Progression to teacher training
Our courses provide an excellent route to training to becoming a qualified teacher when you graduate. Graduates who wish to become qualified teachers in primary education can apply for a one-year teacher training course on completion of an undergraduate honours degree. Those wishing to teach in the lifelong learning (post-14) sector can apply for teacher training courses in this area. This course helped to build my confidence and helped me realise that when you put the hard work in, it’s all worth it in the end. There was so much support from the academic writing team and the tutors who guided me to the finish line and made sure I was on the right track with my work.
