Welcome to the PGR Handbook
Your PGR Handbook introduces key aspects of policy and regulation which form the framework of your research degree programme. Please see below for important information on your first submission point, a quick overview of our Regulations and more information to help you get started on your PGR journey.
Your first submission
All research students have a compulsory submission which is due within a few months of starting the programme. More information can be found in the research support plan and skills audit section of the handbook. You can also see your research degree timeline which will show you your assessment points, depending on the programme you are following.

The Regulations for Awards (Research Degrees)
The Regulations for Awards (Research Degrees) - includes details of how your progress will be assessed and when, the time limits for your programme of research, thesis word count guidance and the criteria for the award of your degree. This resource also sets out the minimum standards that you should expect with regard to research supervision and it details the responsibilities of the University, supervisors, and you as a PGR in terms of your research degree.
Regulations for Postgraduate Research Students
By registering with the University annually, you agree to comply with the Regulations for Postgraduate Research Students and it is important that you take some time to familiarise yourself with these. It includes information about:
- Our PGR Charter;
- Annual registration for your course;
- How you are expected to engage with your research degree and the University;
- Requirements of students studying with us on a visa;
- Interruptions and extensions - what to do if you are ill or your personal circumstances are preventing you from engaging with your studies;
- Important policies and regulations that relate to all students of the University.
Information provided by your School
Your School will provide you with local information about academic and administrative arrangements for your degree, such as:
- A tailored school induction to support you in your first few weeks with us;
- Details regarding any facilities they have;
- Health and safety guidance;
- Opportunities for taking part in conferences, events and training.

Information provided by the International Office
If you are an international student, attending the international student induction is a priority. The International Office can provide advice on visas, healthcare, banking and social activities for international students.
