Over 3,000 students will receive their awards over the course of the nine-day celebration.
TODAY, Monday 9 July, the University of Huddersfield embarks on ten days of graduation ceremonies, where over 3,000 students will receive their awards in person – a further 700 students who have graduated in 2018 are unable to attend the ceremonies.
The ceremonies will be held in the University’s St Paul’s Hall, and during the first week there will be a series of eight honorary awards conferred on distinguished men and women.
The following people will receive an honorary Doctorate of the University.
Scientist and Nobel prize-winner Sir Paul Nurse is a geneticist and cell biologist. His major work has been on the cyclin-dependent protein kinases and how they regulate cell reproduction. Sir Paul was knighted in 1999 and received his Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2001.
Jacqui Dyer recently received her MBE in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to mental health. She is an independent health and social care consultant and has been an advisor on mental health for the Department of Health and Social Care and for the NHS
Rachel Cooper OBE has been leading and advocating design and design research for over 30 years and has undertaken several advisory roles to national and international universities, government and non-governmental organisations.
Four people from the world of business will receive awards…
· Award-winning marketer John Bernard, who is currently the start-up advisor and the EMEA Marketing Director for the San Diego-based medical devices manufacturer Dexcom;
· The former Technical Director of the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) Colin Dennis, who has a long-standing relationship with the University’s Institute of Railway Research;
· The former Head of Personnel for the Bradford & Bingley Building Society Eric Nicholls. Eric was been on the University’s Governing Council since 1999.
· The CEO for Barclays UK, Ashok Vaswani, who started his career banking and finance in India. Ashok joined Barclays in 2010 from J P Morgan Chase.
The University will also confer the title of Emeritus Professor on Professor Ojan Assadian. Ojan is an expert in hygiene and medical microbiology and has much of his career at the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital. He went on to take up the post Professor of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention at the University of Huddersfield in 2015.
