We are an award winning, professionally accredited, research and practice intensive interdisciplinary school. Creativity is our currency.

Our work is inter and multidisciplinary cutting across disciplinary boundaries, providing insight, articulating complex relationships, promoting creativity, engaging communities and solving problems at every level, relevant to today’s society, for the future. The School consists of 3 departments and 7 research centres.

We work with over 500 companies every year on ‘live’ projects, challenging briefs, inspiring practice and guest lectures, field trips and studies, inspirational research, making a difference in a diverse set of areas. Winning many national and international awards and having a strong graduate employment record with our graduates working around the world.

We are very proud of our students. We work collaboratively to meet and exceed their expectations and instil an innovative pedagogical model, which strives for excellence in teaching, research and entrepreneurship.

Our staff are leaders in their areas and we lead globally, significant areas of research and practice.

We opened our new building for the School in September 2019. The Barbara Hepworth Building is a beacon of innovation, the open studio environment empowers students through the co-location of disciplines with the same learning spaces.

Department of Architecture and 3D Design

Welcome to the Department of Architecture and 3D Design at the University of Huddersfield. We have a long history of architectural education, since the school of Architecture was first established by Norman Culley in 1921.

Our programmes focus on cutting edge design practice and address some of the latest challenges and opportunities for our industries, including Sustainability, User Centred Design, and Building Information Modelling. Our international and industry led focus provides students with opportunities to really broaden their perspectives and understand the need to deliver innovative solutions that satisfy the physical, cultural and social conditions wherever development is required.
Our programmes are fully accredited by professional bodies like the Architects Registration Board (ARB), the Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3; the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT); the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE); The Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PASQ); the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM); and the University has Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Accredited Centre Status.

Our enterprising graduates are well represented at the top of the architecture, design and built environment professions, both nationally and internationally.

Department of Fashion and Textiles

The Department of Fashion and Textiles at the University of Huddersfield excels in the areas of teaching and learning, technology, innovation and research. We have a goal of achieving disciplinary excellence in Fashion and Textiles while fostering interdisciplinary research. We aspire to provide a world-leading research platform in design, technology and in the interface between design and technology. We collaborate with external as well and internal stakeholders to promote and conduct cutting-edge fundamental and applied research. We are also proud of the collaboration between our staff and students and spreading of skills and specialist knowledge in the exciting development of courses, modules, projects, research and enterprise.

We have achieved worldwide recognition for merging traditional methods with new and digital technology and we aim to maintain this reputation as well as being recognised for excellence in manufacturing, creativity, skill and business, promotion and marketing.

As a Department, we are entrepreneurial and highly proactive in engagement with the industry. We engage with a wide range of organisations from global conglomerates to small craft-based businesses. This not only maximises the tangible benefits of research but also enriches the experience of our students, empowering them with a professional approach and enabling them to achieve their career ambitions. We develop exciting live projects that range from design briefs with companies to competitions with professional bodies.

We have pioneered groundbreaking conferences that have addressed areas such as textile innovation and creative pattern cutting. These events have attracted global delegates giving them opportunities to present their research and to network in an interdisciplinary environment.
