Legal and Charitable Status of the University

The institution was incorporated as a Higher Education Corporation (HEC) on 21 November 1988 by virtue of the Education Reform Act 1988 (ERA) (Commencement No. 2) Order 1988. The Further and Higher Education Act 1992 (section 77) enabled Higher Education Corporations who were Polytechnics to change their name to University and on 16 June 1992 the Privy Council gave its consent to the new name of the Corporation, and our official, and preferred name, The University of Huddersfield.
