Waseeh grew up in Lahore, Paskistan, coming from a family where science had a prominent role. “My father, by profession is a petroleum engineer and has worked for about 45 years in the oil industry, both in Pakistan, and in many other countries”, he says. A disciplined upbringing where respect and integrity were emphasised helped Waseeh to achieve success in his education.
In addition to his education, he has also been a keen sportsman, “I was given the opportunity to play squash at a professional level and represented my country in a few international tournaments.”
Waseeh always had a strong interest in the sciences, “I have always been fascinated by chemistry and more specifically the way different compounds interact with each other to form new compounds.
"The idea that something could potentially be created and be useful from starting materials that provide no significant use has always interested me.”
He arrived in Huddersfield in 2007. “I chose Huddersfield as it has always had a reputation of being a very comfortable and friendly environment for international students. It also has a very strong department specifically for chemistry which attracted me more.”
Reflecting on his experiences during his degree, Waseeh values the opportunity to pursuing a supervised work experience placement. As preparation for this, he says “The equipment that is made available is also high end and is similar to what different companies provide so the practical experience gained on them was extremely helpful”
Having specialised with optional forensic science modules during his MChem Waseeh is now undertaking a Master’s by research in forensic chemistry, and is currently working on methods for blood stain ageing as well as identification of proteins from crime scenes.
Looking to the future, he says “The major benefit that I have gained from the university is the experience of research. It has taught me what is important to be a good researcher and how to be professional in a research environment.”
To those thinking of studying in the UK, Waseeh says “My advice would be to encourage potential applicants in joining this institution. It not only provides high standards in education, but also provides an environment which is comfortable for students coming from different countries with varying cultural backgrounds.”
