To mark the 175th Anniversary of the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society, a predecessor institution, the University of Huddersfield has created a Roll of Honour of alumni who have made an outstanding, noteworthy contribution to the fields of science and technology, learning, the arts, business and the professions, and/or in public life via community involvement, meritorious heroism or significant philanthropy, be it regionally, nationally and/or internationally. Each of the following are notable alumni of the University or a predecessor institution.

Adil Ray

Adil Ray is an actor and radio and television presenter. He stars in the BBC One comedy Citizen Khan, which he created and co-wrote, as well as presenting on various BBC radio stations.

Alderman John Fligg Brigg

Alderman John Fligg Brigg was one of the first ‘five young men’ that originally formed the Young men’s Mental Improvement Society, the Universitys' predecessor institution. Later, he became Mayor of Huddersfield.

Bob Cryan is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, an institution with over 22,000 students from over 130 countries. Recipient of the inaugural Guardian Inspiring University Leader Award 2013.

Brian Anderson

A former boxer who was British middleweight champion between 1986 and 1987. After retiring from boxing, Anderson went on to train as a probation officer and study at Huddersfield, graduating in 1988.

Colin Burgon was a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Elmet from 1997 to 2010. He was also a research officer with the GMB Union.

Sir George Buckley is one of the world’s leading businessmen. He became Chairman of the Brunswick Corporation in 1997 and in 2005 was appointed Chairman, President and CEO of 3M.

Professor Guy Lloyd Jones studied Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology at University of Huddersfield. His distinguished academic research career led to his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of the highest honours in the scientific world.

James Sugden OBE is the former Chairman of the Weavers Committee for the Worshipful Company of Weavers. He was awarded an OBE for his services to the Textile Industry in 2010.

The Tetley brothers were tea merchants who founded Joseph Tetley & Co.in Huddersfield in 1837. They were subscribers to the Huddersfield Mechanics’ Institute, one of the University’s predecessor institutions.
